Colorado golf course Review

Red Sky Golf Club - Fazio course - Colorado golf course

The Red Sky Golf Club in Wolcott Colorado presents two championship courses - both of which were rated in the top 100 courses you can play in the United States by Golf Magazine. The Norman course was rated # 25 and the Fazio # 90 by this respected publication. Simply put, these are two of the most remarkable golf experiences imaginable. Play is available to members and guests only - however the average guy(or girl) can work around that by staying at one the resort properties that Red Sky is affiliated with. For information, visit the properties website by clicking here.

Located just northeast of the Beaver Creek Resort region, Red Sky is conveniently located off I-70, and features first class conditioning and service - from the golf carts to the cart paths to clubhouse and practice facilities, everything is top notch. The courses not only provide exquisite playing conditions, but also present visitors the opportunity to encounter dramatic Rocky Mountain landscapes in their pure environmental form (as worded by Tom Fazio). The two courses are rotated daily, with one course open for resort guests and the other utilized by members and guests only.

On property, overlooking the 18th hole at the Fazio, is a clubhouse with well stocked pro shop, restaurant/lounge, locker rooms with showers and outdoor patio with wonderful views. The Red Sky Golf Academy provides breathtaking views of the surrounding Rocky Mountains and provides golf instruction using a Flightscope X3 Launch Monitor and state of the art video analysis. Lessons on the spacious practice tee are available for individuals, groups or large corporate events. Practice facilities consist of a targeted grass range, beautiful short game area with sand bunker plus putting green near both the range and the first tee. The members only clubhouse with swimming pool and upscale amenities (snack shop outside as well) is located on the Norman course property. On both courses the yardage marking system consists of sprinklers heads measured to the center of the green and 100, 150 and 200 yard markers on the cart paths (rocks) and fairways (plaques) on all par fours and fives. Tee boxes also provide measurements. Each golf cart has a chart with information on the daily pin placements.

FAZIO COURSE

Guests will find the practice area at the Fazio visually stunning - and the momentum is not broken on the first tee. The beautiful elevated tee area provides spectacular visits which are often repeated, as golfers will find numerous raised tee boxes and downhill approaches that provide extraordinary scenery. The playing conditions from tee to green were simply immaculate on our mid-July visit. Terraced tees, groomed fairways, sculpted bunkers, raised green complexes and beautiful water features combine to make this a special experience. Though not a desert layout - the Fazio reminded me of the courses at Troon North in Arizona - similar in character with visions to be remembered.

There are 5 sets of tee boxes that play to distance and slopes measuring 7113 yards/135 slope, 6813 yards/128 slope, 6405 yards/120 slope and 5994 yards/138 slope for women and 5265 yards with a slope of 127 for ladies hitting from the forward tees. Water hazards come into play on 4 holes, and 53 so0ft sand bunkers of various shapes and sizes are strategically situated near the landing zones or greenside.

The green complexes are large and undulating, but there is frequently recovery room from slightly off-line approaches. Golfers will encounter wide fairways often bordered by natural areas and mountain brush, with some forced carries that are reasonable in length. There are no extremely difficult holes on the Fazio - although it is recommend to note that there is a pond to the right of the green on the downhill approach on 14 (not visible). This is by far the easier of the two courses on property. Do what you have to do (IE - stay at a participating resort - it will be worth it!) to play this course!
