LAKOTA CANYON RANCH GOLF CLUB (970-984-9700)
Colorado golf course review
Lakota Canyon is recognized as one of the top all around golf experiences in Colorado, with awards that include: Best New Course (Golf Digest 2005), Top 10 New Course (Golf
Magazine 2005),# 46 out of the top 100 courses in 2006 (Golfweek), and Top 100 Course (Golf Digest 2008).
This Jim Engh championship design features the elaborate signature sand bunkers that define Engh's layouts, with the 20 that come into play greenside or near the landing
zones creating a good degree of havoc. Water plays a prominent role aesthetically and in challenge as hazards figure into the design on 7 of the holes.
Located just off I-70 in New Castle, Lakota Canyon Ranch provides an exhilarating experience for all levels of players with outstanding vistas of the rugged western Colorado
canyons, and with elevation changes that sometimes feature drops of up to 100 feet. Golfers will encounter rolling fairways that are carved into the hillsides, leading to tightly
placed green complexes with undulating putting surfaces protected by mounding, slopes, and natural areas.
Land in one of the strategically placed traps and recoveries for par are a challenge. The terrain creates some bowl effects both on the greens and fairways, but as the slope
ratings indicate, this is a challenging experience from the 2 back tee areas. There are 4 sets that measure in distance and slope - 7111 yards/147 slope, 6369 yards/ 127 slope,
5608 yards/ 110 slope for men and 138 for women, and 4744 yards with a reasonable slope fo 123 for ladies hitting from the front tees.
On property is a nicely stocked pro shop, snack area and snack area with outstanding views. The practice facilities are comprehensive, and include a targeted grass range, short
game area with sand bunker plus putting green. UpLink GPS - standard on all golf carts, provides accurate information from tee to the pin for all holes.
There are some forced carries, but this course is very playable for mid to high handicappers from the two forward sets of tees. We highly recommend a round here! For more info,
