RED SKY GOLF CLUB - NORMAN COURSE (970-754-8425)
Colorado golf course review
The Red Sky Golf Club in Wolcott Colorado presents two championship courses - both of which were rated in the top 100 courses you can play in the United States by Golf
Magazine. The Norman course was rated # 25 and the Fazio # 90 by this respected publication. Simply put, these are two of the most remarkable golf experiences imaginable.
Play is available to members and guests only - however the average guy(or girl) can work around that by staying at one the resort properties that Red Sky is affiliated with. For
information, visit the properties website by clicking here.
Located just northeast of the Beaver Creek Resort region, Red Sky is conveniently located off I-70, and features first class conditioning and service - from the golf carts to the cart
paths to clubhouse and practice facilities, everything is top notch. The courses not only provide exquisite playing conditions, but also present visitors the opportunity to encounter
dramatic Rocky Mountain landscapes in their pure environmental form (as worded by Tom Fazio). The two courses are rotated daily, with one course open for resort guests and
the other utilized by members and guests only.
On property, overlooking the 18th hole at the Fazio, is a clubhouse with well stocked pro shop, restaurant/lounge, locker rooms with showers and outdoor patio with wonderful
views. The Red Sky Golf Academy provides breathtaking views of the surrounding Rocky Mountains and provides golf instruction using a Flightscope X3 Launch Monitor and state
of the art video analysis. Lessons on the spacious practice tee are available for individuals, groups or large corporate events. Practice facilities consist of a targeted grass range,
beautiful short game area with sand bunker plus putting green near both the range and the first tee. The members only clubhouse with swimming pool and upscale amenities
(snack shop outside as well) is located on the Norman course property. On both courses the yardage marking system consists of sprinklers heads measured to the center of the
green and 100, 150 and 200 yard markers on the cart paths (rocks) and fairways (plaques) on all par fours and fives. Tee boxes also provide measurements. Each golf cart has a
chart with information on the daily pin placements.
NORMAN COURSE
The Norman course is the more challenging of the two layouts, due primarily to extended length, more elevation changes and dynamic, well bunkered green complexes that often
play uphill. The fairways present ample landing zones, but this layout is just tougher from 100 yards in. 74 soft and bunkers come into play - with those near the green complexes
often deep and penal. There are 6 holes with water hazards in play, including several with forced carries. Swales and collection areas await offline approaches, but players will
appreciate the manicured fringes, which are cut so short that putting is a viable option.
The drive up to the first tee leaves one wide-jawed, as from the cart path above the opening hole the entire layout is visible. The area around the 15th tee presents some of the
highest elevation, and the vistas from that point are remarkable. There are 5 sets of tee boxes that play to distance and slopes measuring a whopping 7580 yards/145 slope, 6989
yards/136 slope, 6572 yards/131 slope, 6080/146 slope for women, and 5269 yards with a slope of 137 for those ladies from the forward tees.
Opened in 2003, the Norman course at Red Sky is a must play for visitors to the area. We highly recommend that you do whatever is necessary to secure a tee time (IE either
make quick friends with a member or stay at one of the affiliated resorts in the area). The playing conditions are among the best in the country, the service and amenities leave
little to want and the golf experience is a memorable one. For more info on the Norman course, visit our page with a direct link to their website by clicking here.
